Goulash
This goulash recipe is truly a classic American comfort food! A hearty pasta dish made with ground beef and a rich tomato-based sauce. It all comes together in about 30 minutes. My family loves it
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef (90/10)
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 28 ounces easy marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 – 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 2 cups elbow macaroni
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
- 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional
- parmesan cheese for serving, optional
Instructions
In a large pot, over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Break it apart with a spatula as it is cooking. Cook until no longer pink. Drain the liquid from the ground beef.
Push the beef to the side of the pan and add in the chopped onion. Cook until the onions are soft. About 3-5 minutes. Add in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.
Add tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire sauce and spices. Season with salt and pepper to taste. (approximately 3/4 – 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper)
Stir together, simmer the meat sauce for 10 minutes. Add the macaroni to the pot, cover and continue to simmer for another 30 minutes. If is too dry add in a little more water.
Test taste for seasoning, add more salt and pepper, if needed. Add in the grated cheddar cheese, if desired. Stir and test for flavor, add more salt and pepper, if needed. Turn the heat off, let rest for 10 minutes before serving,
